The Performance Jumping Coach reports to the Senior Manager, Equestrian (BREC) and is responsible for the development of the discipline of jumping in Hong Kong. The post holder will provide specialist jumping coaching to all levels of riders. They will also help with the schooling of members’ and Clubs’ horses at the Beas River Equestrian Centre (BREC).
The job holder should work closely with the staff of the retraining unit to assist in the retraining of retired racehorses. They will attend regular horse assessments to select potential horse for development in the discipline of show jumping. They will also be encouraged to participate in competitions with retrained racehorses.
The post holder also acts as the Performance Jumping Coach for the National Youth Squad and may also be a consultant / coach to the Equestrian Federation as required. Working with the Head of Equestrian Affairs (HEA), the post holder will also assist in regular performance management assessments and competition planning for the Youth squad. The post holder will provide leadership and guidance on the development of show jumping in Hong Kong.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide high quality coaching, both on the flat and jumping to staff, livery clients, youth squad members and relevant riding school clients
• School livery horses on the flat and over fences as requested by Members or riding school horses as requested by the Senior Manager, Equestrian (BREC)
• Work with the Executive Manager, Equestrian Affairs to develop programs to encourage more participation in jumping in Hong Kong e.g. Lecture demos and clinics.
• Select suitable horses for development for use in the discipline of show jumping and actively assist in their production, with view to developing a wider pool of jumping horses for use in Hong Kong or by Hong Kong riders
• Work with the Executive Manager, Equestrian Affairs, as well as the Performance Manager and fellow discipline coaches to develop and execute youth programmes to develop talented young riders. As required, travel with Hong Kong representatives participating in international competitions, offering necessary coaching support.
• Coach fellow staff members to improve their knowledge and skill of schooling horses on the flat and over fences; also prepare them to participate in monthly competitions and annual BHS exams
• Act as a member of the Show Committee and actively contribute to the management of horse shows, particularly focussing on developing high quality, progressive competitive opportunities for all levels to participate in show jumping. To oversee all jumping competitions at BREC.
• Working alongside the Administrative team to maintain accurate and efficient records to ensure effective monitoring of lessons and associated billing to clients, horse training and utilisation records, competition and fittening programmes for school and livery horses
• Ensure that the Club’s OSH safety policies are adhered to at all times and that safe practices are instilled in all areas of work
• Perform any other duties as assigned by management
Requirements:
• Should be an experienced jumping rider who has competed to at least 1.40m level
• Should be an experienced jumping coach, ideally with relevant equestrian coaching qualifications (BHS Qualifications: Performance Coach BHSI or equivalent)
• Should be flexible and experienced at coaching riders of all ages and levels from introductory to advanced levels
• Have an expert knowledge of training methods for schooling a variety of horses both under saddle and from the ground; previous experience of working with thoroughbreds would be advantageous
• A qualified course builder will be particularly desirable
• Preferably a fluent speaker of English; some understanding of Cantonese will be an advantage but not essential
• Have knowledge of child protection and safeguarding protocols and holds a current background check
